On a blustery day in East Yorkshire the YMCA managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory as the home team scored 17 unanswered point in the last 10 minutes to run out winners 28 – 27. The visitors seemingly had the game won scoring four trys to one and leading 27 – 11 going into the last 10 minutes but the home team, roared on by a very vociferous crowd, had a different idea.
The first quarter of the game was an even contest played out in mid field with both sides trying to come to terms with the windy conditions but it was the YM who broke the deadlock with a Stead penalty on 17 minutes. Due to the frustrating stalemate the game was always on the edge and it was no surprise when two men, Burnett for the YM and Heely from the home team went to the bin. Just on half time Bridlington equalised with a Webb penalty.
Half Time, Bridlington 3 – 3 YM
From the restart YM had Brid under pressure on their own line and from a penalty Bradley took a quick tap and darted to the line only for home No8 Thompson to tackle him within the prescribed 10 meters. Thompson was given 10 minutes rest for his indiscretion. With a man advantage the YM chose a scrum from the penalty and after two collapsed efforts the referee awarded the visitors a penalty try. With no conversion needed the YM now led 10 – 3. The home team responded from the restart with a Wragg penalty after the YM hung on to the ball in the tackle.
With the game now opening up the YM further increased their advantage when after a good run by full back Fletcher into the Brid half the ball was recycled to centre Clough who shrugged off would be tacklers to score near the posts. Stead add the extras YM 17 – 6 Brid.
Things got even better for the visitors, as the now rampant YM further increased their lead, as scrum half Bradley squeezed over in the corner after good work from Tetley and Hodge had taken play to the home line. Stead was unable to convert from the touchline YM 22 – 6 Brid.
With the game now open and flowing from end to end it was no surprise that Brid reduced the arrears with a try of their own. After good forward pressure the ball was passed out right for the supporting full back Davies to score in the corner, conversion missed, YM 22 – Brid 11.
On 66 minutes two consecutive penalties took play to the Brid line and with the YM scrum now on top they chose to scrum rather than kick for goal. The ball won it was transferred quickly out left for wing Burns-Smith to score in the corner. Stead was unable to add the extras but YM were now coasting 27 – 11.
With 10 minutes to go team discipline let the visitors down as three consecutive penalties took play to the YM line. Good recycling allowed Wragg to score and as he converted his own try it was now game on, YM 27 – 18 Brid. With their tails up and YM wing forward Garside in the bin Brid took the initiative with another unconverted Wragg try, YM 27 – 23 Brid.
With time up a now tiring YM defence allowed Brid one last chance which they took as wing forward Benninger crashed over in the corner to send the home team and supporters into raptures.
Final Score: Bridlington 28 –27 YM
