YMCA’s recent run of good form came to an abrupt end at Moorend where Cleckheaton ran out comfortable winners 27 – 13. Although having the lion’s share of the possession in the first period errors in judgement and a dogged home defence meant the visitors could not push home this advantage. The second period was a different story as the home pack out muscled the visitors.
The YM made a bright start and soon had points on the board through a Stead penalty. They further increased their advantage on 25 minutes with a try from the tireless Sam Hodge. From deep in their own 22 wing Burnett split the home defence and took play into the Cleckheaton half. With the home team on the back foot the play was soon on the home line and after several thrusts at the line the ball was worked to Hodge who touched down wide out. Stead was unable to add the extras, YM 8 – 0 Cleck.
Cleckheaton responded almost immediately with a try of their own when from a 5-meter scrum their powerful pack shunted the visitors back over their own line for No8 Seddon to touch down. Sweetman was unable to add the conversion, YM 8 – 5 Cleck.
As half time approached YM were once again were camped on the Cleckheaton line and after two unsuccessful attempts at a pushover try the ball was scrambled out wide and they appeared to have got their reward of a try only for the referee to adjudicate that the ball had been held up over the line.
Half Time YM 8 – 5 Cleckheaton.
The second period was a different story all together as the home team capitalised on YM errors to take the game away from the visitors. The accurate boot of home fly half Sweetman kept the visitors pinned in their own 22 for long periods and it was only a matter of time before they scored. The inevitable score came after a line out when the Cleckheaton pack once again rolled over for No 8 Seddon to touch down. Sweetman added the extras and Cleckheaton took the lead which they never liked like losing. YM 8 – 12 Cleck.
Another converted try was scored by Woodward after another trade mark rolling maul near the visitor’s line. The YM did see a glimmer of hope when after a rare foray into the Cleckheaton half Hodge was again on hand to touch down wide out but with the conversion failing the YM were still 9 points in arrears. YM 13 – 22 Cleckheaton.
With time almost up Cleckheaton rubbed salt into the YM wounds when wing Woodhead collected a high crossfield kick from Sweetman to score wide out. Sweetmans conversion attempt went wide to give a final score YM 13 – 27 Cleckheaton.
