YMCA went to the top of North East 1 with a solid away win, 39 – 13, against County Durham club Consett. In very difficult playing conditions the game was even in the first half but the YM forwards wore down the home team in the second period to put the game beyond Consett.
With the pitch already heavy the expression” it’s grim up north” had a whole new meaning as the game kicked off in heavy rain and swirling mist and it was no surprise that good handling would be at a premium. With both teams trying to come to terms with the conditions it took time for the game to settle down and it was the YM who took the lead. On 10 minutes a YM penalty took play deep into the Consett half and from the resultant line out the ball was moved quickly into mid field for full back Sam Fletcher to race through a gap to score by the posts, Stead added the conversion to give the visitors a handy 7-point lead.
From the restart Consett upped their game and started to pressurise the YM defence using their big forwards to pick and drive. Good YM defence restricted the home team to a Cook penalty, Consett 3 – 7 YM.
On 20 minutes and with Consett in the ascendency it was much against the run of play when Stead increased the YM lead with another penalty, Consett 3 – 10 YM.
Eventually home pressure had to pay and on 27 minutes Consett got their reward with a try in the corner with right wing Dan Patchcott touching down and with Cook converting the game was all square, 10 – 10.
Stead and Cook then swapped penalties, 13 – 13, but on the stroke of half time YM took the lead. A YM penalty took play into the Consett half and from the resultant line out the ball was moved quickly into the centre for Gavin Stead to burst through the defence. The centre outpaced the home full back with an arcing run to score in the corner. Unable to add the extras YM took a handy 5-point lead into the half time break. Consett 13 – 18 YM.
As the weather deteriorated the home team were visibly tiring and the YM forwards began to take control. On 52 minutes a Yellow card reduced the home team to 14 men and the YM were quick to take advantage. A scrum on the Consett line saw the YM pack shunt the home pack over the line for No8 Sam Hodge to score, Stead added the conversion, Consett 13 – 25 YM.
With the YM well on top the plucky home defence held out until the 71st minute when after powerful drives by Hill, Dyke and Black took play to within 5 meters of the home line the ubiquitous Sam Hodge was on hand to score in the corner. Stead added the conversion, Consett 13 – 32 YM.
With the clock running down and visibility getting worse the YM scored their fifth try. A Consett scrum on half way was destroyed by the YM pack and as the ball squirted out scrum half Bradley pounced on the ball. From the ensuing maul Gavin Stead erupted out of the middle with the ball to race 50 meters to score under the posts and with him adding the conversion it gave a final score, Consett 13 – 39 YM.
