In ideal conditions made for running rugby neither team disappointed but it was the YMCAs dogged defence that proved the difference as they claimed all five points to run out 37 – 10 winners. Gavin Stead once again stole the individual honours in an excellent team performance with 22 point, 1 try, 4 conversions and 3 penalties.
Morpeth showed their intent from the off putting their pacey backs to good use on the wide-open spaces of Laund Hill and it was only good YM defence that kept them at bay. For 20 minutes with their scrum in the ascendency Morpeth continued to dominate field position but were unable to break the YM defence.
On 25 minutes from inside their own 22 the YM broke out of defence as clever play released left wing Kyle Tetley on a barnstorming run down the touch line to take play into the Morpeth 22. YM retained possession to take play to the visitor’s line and after four penalties the referee lost patience with Morpeth and wing forward Robinson was shown the yellow card.
As the half hour mark approached YM took the lead with a Jack Housley try which Stead converted. From a line out near the visitors line the ball was rolled in field and second row Housley forced his way over, YM 7 – 0 Morpeth.
YM continued to dominate field position and were unlucky not to increase their lead as lively full back Fletcher was held up over the line after good work from Chappell. As half time approached YM doubled their score with a Stead try which he converted from the touch line. The under-pressure Morpeth defence were forced into a hasty kick which full back Fletcher caught and returned with interest. After several phases of play the ball was worked out right for Chappell to send his centre partner over in the corner. Half time YM 14 – 0 Morpeth.
The first 10 minutes of the second half started like the first with the visitor’s pack dominating possession but the resolute YM defence restricted them to a Hornby penalty. Almost immediately Stead replied for the YM with two long range penalties as the home team came back into the game. YM 20 – 3 Morpeth.
On 60 minutes and with Morpeth threatening the home line the rushing YM defence forced a dropped ball in mid field which Chappell hacked on into the visitor’s half. With the visitor’s defence unable to scramble back the ball was worked out left for supporting wing forward Harry Garside to run in from 20 meters out and with Stead adding the extras it gave the YM a 27 – 3 lead. On 70 minutes Stead further increased the YM lead with another penalty.
On 75 minutes the hard-working Morpeth forwards got their reward when after they completely demolished a YM scrum on the YM line lively scrum half Elliot touched down, Hornby added the extras, YM 30 – 10 Morpeth.
With time almost up the home team put the icing on the cake as wing Tetley touched down in the corner. A penalty took play deep into the Morpeth half. From the line out the forwards took the ball on and when the backs were released Chappell created space for his wing partner to touch down in the corner and with Stead adding the extras from the touch line the final score was YM 37 – 10 Morpeth.
