The 2nd home fixture of the season saw the YM take on newly promoted Scarborough who have started in good style lying in 4th place immediately under the YMCA who occupy third spot.
On the basis of the league positions it was likely to be a hard fought contest and so it proved with dominance and the lead see-sawing throughout the course of the game.
The YM started brightly and quickly had the visitors on the back foot with the forwards driving the ball up well giving the backs the opportunity to show what they could do.
The early pressure told as the YM were quickly awarded a penalty after a Scarborough high tackle in their own 22. Gavin Stead was on hand, as he was all afternoon, to get the first points on the board. 3-0
Things looked even better when 5 minutes later after the YM had run the ball up a number of times Bradley released the ball into the backs. Stead broke the line and found Clough outside him in support. With plenty still to do the big centre rounded the winger and outpaced the cover defence to score a try to the left of the posts leaving Stead an easy conversion. 10-0
Unfortunately for the YM Scarborough are made from stern stuff and they started to get their act together with a series of strong drives in the forwards taking the ball well into YM territory. They camped close to the YM line and forced the home side into defence, however the deadlock was broken when Scarboroughs tight head prop Jones forced his way over from close out. Although no doubt by the time he gets back to Scarborough it will have been a full 40 metre sprint! Stand off Ratcliffe added the extras from the conversion to put the score onto 10-7
Stead got 3 more on the board for the YM after securing another penalty when the visitors were caught offside 13-7
Scarborough came back strongly and once again dominated play in the YM half and having forced an error at the back of the YM scrum, they took possession of the ball and whipped it out to winger Holloway who squeezed through the narrowest of gaps to get in at the corner. Once again Ratcliffes conversion was good giving his side the lead for the first time in the match. 13-14
As half time approached it was Scarborough who were once again on the attack and as they pressed YM scrum half Bradley fell foul of the referee, when he was adjudged to have made a late tackle, earning himself 10 minutes in the sin bin.
From he ensuing penalty the visitors built the momentum, making enough space for second row Brown to force his way over just before the half time whistle. Matters were compounded when Ratcliffe added the 2 further points to stretch the lead to 2 scores bang on half time. 13-21
Half time 13-21
At the resumption of play the YM seemed to rally and again Stead was on hand to capitalise on a penalty decision in the YM’S favour after the visitors had been guilty of a high but not malicious tackle. 16-21
The visitors were not in any mood to give up their lead and once again forced the home side back into a defensive position.
No sooner had Bradley returned to the fray than the YM were again a man light after hooker Ben Hill was sin binned for a late tackle. With a shuffle round in the pack required, the visitors managed to gain the upper hand at the scrum and forced the YM back on their own put in, causing problems in retrieving the ball out of the back of the scrum. Initially it looked like the YM had managed to gather the ball but then it came loose and was swiftly pounced on by the visitors giving second row Brown the chance to get over for the second time and at the same time earn his side a try bonus point. Thankfully for the YM Ratcliffes conversion bounced off the left upright back into the field of play. 16-26
YM heads did not go down and once again they came back onto the offensive putting pressure on the Scarborough defence. Their efforts paid dividends when the visitors were caught offside at the ruck close to their own line. Stead opted to go for goal in the absence of a recognised hooker and added the extra 3 points to bring the score to within 7 points. 19-26
More pressure followed and Stead added 3 further points from the boot after the visitors had been caught offside in their eagerness to get up in the tackle. 22-26
It was all YM pressure as the game came to a close and they were unlucky not to be awarded a try when winger Tetley appeared to go over in the left corner only to have the score disallowed for having a foot in touch.
The YM continued to press and eventually the very robust Scarborough defence left enough of a gap for Clough to make the break and give the ball to full back Fletcher who rounded the last line of defence to get a try wide out, which was enough to give the YM a slender 1 point lead. Stead remained calm and once again slotted the conversion bringing the score to 29-26 which is where it remained for the last few minutes of play.
Final Score 29-26
Once again a very hard won victory for the YM who stuck to the task against a strong visiting side.
Outstanding displays from Stead who didn’t miss a thing with the boot all day and his counterpart in the centres Clough. These two will cause some damage throughout the course of the season.
Again the more seasoned players put in a full shift with man of the match Sam Hodge, Stu Dyke and Ben Hill in at everything, ably assisted by their counterparts in the pack.
Also Bradley and Garden look to have the makings of a good pairing at half back.
Only concern is once again defence with the visitors being allowed to get over for twice as many tries on the day than the YM.
