On the coldest day of the year so far the YM travelled to the home of local rivals West Leeds in this North One East clash.

On the back of a good performance last week against high flying Morpeth it was hoped that the YM could maintain the momentum and pick up from where they left off.

For the first 20 minutes of the game the YM dominated, putting the home side into serious defence mode. Stead was unlucky when his first penalty attempt bounced off the post back into play but was on target moments later when another Leeds infringement saw him given a 2nd chance which he gladly accepted, to put the visitors 3 points to the good. 0-3

Further pressure followed and from a scrum close out the YM pack had the home side on the rack, to a point where they dropped the scrummage as they were being shunted back, leaving the referee little choice but to award a penalty try and automatic conversion 0-10

Further points followed for the YM after a well worked ball saw Fletcher come into the line and sidestep the defence to sprint in for a score. Steads conversion was off the mark but the score moved on to a healthy 15 point lead for the YM. 0-15

Leeds rallied and started to come back into the game forcing their way into the YM 22 from where second row Tom Jackson was able to find a gap and crash over the line for a try which was converted by scrum half Breakwell. 7-15

They continued to press and the YM themselves were under the cosh as Leeds went in again courtesy of influential forward George Carpenter, who managed to force his way over the line from close range. Breakwell added the extra points from the conversion and the score moved to 14-15

With half time on the horizon it was left to Sam Hodge to squeeze in at the right corner for the YM after a nice passage of play involving forwards and backs had created the merest hint of a gap for the flanker go through. Once again Stead was adrift with his conversion attempt. 14-20

As half time approached the YM were still continuing to press with no further luck.

Half time 14-20

With the second half under way the pattern was similar to the first, with the YM throwing everything at the Leeds defence, which held to a point. However, the sheer power of Stu Dyke the YM tight head prop was enough to smash a hole in the defensive wall to get yet another YM score. This time Stead added the extra points on offer to take the YM back into a healthy lead. 14-27

Leeds had their moments and were up for making a game of it, but their efforts were being thwarted by a good YM defence and with the occasional break out looking dangerous it wasn’t a surprise when the YM added to their score after a super passage of play involving forwards and backs created a gap for Fletcher to work his magic. He jinked inside and outside and the Leeds defence couldn’t manage to lay a finger on him as he danced through for another YM score. Stead was once again on target to put the game all over bar the shouting. 14-34

The visitors relaxed and let the home side have a final tilt at them resulting in another score for Carpenter which was once again converted by Breakwell to bring the score to 21-34

The YM had the last say in the matter when a brilliant break from well inside their own half saw Stead in open space, he took on the defence before handing the ball to Andrade who in turn flipped the ball up out of the tackle into the hands of the supporting Burnet for an excellent final unconverted score in the corner. 21-39
